In the retina alone, our brains make use of at least 60 distinct types of neuron. 

Although much beloved by students of neuronal structure, the anatomical details of retinal cells, beautiful as they are, are not important here. The more general point is that cells defined as specific entities by morphological criteria have thus far, without exception, turned out to have distinct physiological functions. This implies a level of complexity of neural processing beyond the usual textbook description.
